THE BIBLE

The Bible contains a total of sixty six books. There are thirty nine separate books in the Old Testament and twenty seven in the New.

The definition of testament is “a covenant between humans and God or a statement of belief.” The Bible was written by over forty different writers from all walks of life. Included in these were shepherds, farmers, tent-makers, physicians, fishermen, priests, philosophers and even kings. Despite the many differences in occupation and the time it took to write the Bible - it is an extremely well written book that fits together very well. Many class it as the greatest literary work ever written.

Moses (the Hebrew prophet who led the Israelites from Egypt across the Red sea on a journey known as the Exodus; Moses received the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai) wrote the first five books of the Bible, referred to as the Pentateuch; the foundation of the Bible.

The Apostle Paul (a Christian missionary to the Gentiles; author of several Epistles in the New Testament; even though Paul was not present at the Last Supper he is considered an apostle; "Paul's name was Saul prior to his conversion to Christianity) wrote 14 books of the New Testament. The Bible was written over a period of some 1,500 years, from around 1450 B.C. to about 100 A.D.

Many scholars agree that Job (a Jewish hero in the Old Testament who maintained his faith in God in spite of afflictions that tested him) is the oldest book in the Bible, written by an unknown Israelite about 1500 B.C. Others believe that the Pentateuch (the first of three divisions of the Hebrew Scriptures comprising the first five books of the Hebrew Bible considered as a unit written between 1446 and 1406 B.C.

Malachi (messenger or angel, the last of the minor prophets, and the writer of the last book of the Old Testament canon (Mal. 4:4, 5, 6). Nothing is known of him beyond what is contained in his book of prophecies was written about 400 B.C.)

The oldest book of the New Testament is probably the book of James (The son of Zebedee and Salome; an elder brother of John the apostle. He was one of the twelve. He was by trade a fisherman, in partnership with Peter. With John and Peter he was present at the transfiguration, at the raising of Jairus's daughter, and in the garden with our Lord. Because, probably, of their boldness and energy, he and John were called Boanerges, i.e., "sons of thunder." He was the first martyr among the apostles, having been beheaded by King Herod Agrippa.

The youngest book in the New Testament is the book of Revelation. Being the youngest it was written around 95 A.D. The Bible was written in three languages: Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek.
